A Permissionless Public Ledger

dchan is a permissionless public blockchain. Anyone can post metadata to it—infohashes, board references, comments—the same way anyone can post messages to Bitcoin, Ethereum, or any other public ledger. No one has the ability to censor what is posted. Not us. Not validators. Not anyone.

Only metadata is stored on-chain. Actual content lives in the global BitTorrent mainline DHT—a worldwide peer-to-peer network that exists entirely outside of dchan. The DHT has operated independently since 2005, predates dchan, and will continue regardless of dchan's existence. dchan simply references torrents in this pre-existing global network via infohashes.

Seeder Sovereignty

Seeders control their own policies for what content they share, seed, and download. This happens entirely off-chain. Each node operator decides what they serve. Seeding policies are local—they affect only that operator's node, never the blockchain or other nodes.

We cannot control what is posted to the chain. We cannot control what seeders choose to serve. This is the architecture, not a policy choice.

Filtering Tools

Core contributors develop tools for torrent users to configure their own content filters. For partners who enable it, we assist in building advanced filtering capabilities—including CSAM detection filters that check content against authorized hash databases during indexing. These tools empower node operators to make their own decisions about what they serve.

The protocol cannot adjudicate. Users post, seeders serve, courts decide legality. The swarm decides persistence.
